Hawkers fall prey to brazen break-ins

Q1a) Why is it easy for burglars to break into stalls at the two markets in the Kallang area?

- The stalls are open at the top. This makes the burglars get in easily by the ceilings, climbing up the pipes or running across the metal bars along the walls.

Q1b) What is the Geylang East Central Merchants' Association going to do about the break-ins?

- The chairman of the Geylang East Central Merchants' Association, Mr Tan Seng Peng, suggested to meet the National Environment Agncy (NEA) and the twon councils to search for further improving security. He also wanted to vary the stall arrangement.

Q2) What do you think should be done to tighten the security of the markets? What do you think of the burglars who brazenly break into the stalls?

- To tighten the security of the markets, the stall holders must store a few closed-circuit television (CCTV) to monitor the surroundings ofthe markets. This is to ensure that the markets are fully secured. The stall holders should make sure that they do not leave any valuables back in their stalls. They also should make sure that the stalls are locked properly.

The burglars that break into the stalls maybe drinkers. This is because the stalls do not have anything that is rich in value, so why would there be a buglary? Most importantly, most burglars that break into a place, they would wear gloves so they won't get identified. But, in this case, the burglars left their fingerprints and footprints on the walls, floors and countertops.
